Some new(?) games

Hello SCOUTS-Lers,
Rick Harned from Louisville asked for some new gaming ideas and I passed
a couple of my favorites on to him. Then I thought that the rest of you
might find them fun, so here they are:
BALLOON SOCCER/HOCKEY
Equipment: One large box or trash can(approx. 30 gal) for each team
20 inflated balloons of one color for each team
Space needed: Large room or half of basketball court (approx.)
Players: 1 goalie and any number of teammates per team
Teams: 2, 3, or 4, consisting of one goalie and up to 6 fielders.
Note: You can have any number of fielders, you just might
need more room to play.
Setup: Place the goals equal distant apart, about 30 feet.
Goalie in goalie area in front of goal, all other players
in the center of the play area ready for the "face-off"
Start: Dump all balloons into the middle of the players
Rules: The job of the goalie is to place his/her color balloons into the
"goal" (trash can, large box, whatever) behind him/her. The goalie
is the only one that can use their hands. The goalie can not leave
the "Goalie Zone" and noone else can enter. The teammates try to kick
their balloons over to their goalie while the other team tries to
kick their balloons over to their respective goalie. One hitch that
makes this really fun for the boys, they can stomp the balloons be-
longing to the other team. Once a balloon is in the goal, it can't
be stomped. For safety ( we don't want any goalie fingers getting
stomped!!) the goalie has about a 3-5 foot radius that the other
players can't enter. Play continues for whatever length periods you
want, and for however many periods you want. The winner (if you
choose to have winners) is the one with the most balloons in their
goal.
Notes: Clean up is not too bad, you can usually get the boys to do a
decent enough job (this also helps to settle them down afterwards).
This game can be adapted for three or four teams without to many
changes. More than that would probably need two games (Playoffs??)
GIANTS, WIZARDS, AND ELVES.
This game is a variation of the old rock, paper, scissors game we all played
as kids.
Equipment: None
Space: Indoors or outdoors, about half a basketball court.
Players: About 5 - 25 per team
Teams: 2
Setup: The two teams line up facing each other shoulder to shoulder
in a single line. Leave about 20 or 30 feet between teams, and
each team member should be about an arms length away from one-
another.
Start: The leader (an adult usually) calls huddle, each team forms a
huddle (as in football) and decides if they want to be a Giant,
Wizard, or an Elf. All the team must be the same. When they
have decided, the form the line facing the other team as before.
When both teams are ready, the leader cries "Ready, Set, Go" and
the two teams "present"(see below). They then rush across to each
other with the "more powerful" team trying to tag as many members
of the other team as possible before the other team crosses the
line that the "more powerful" team started from. The "more powerful"
team is decided by the following rules.
Order of Power:
Giants are big and therefore are able to step on those tiny little
elves and squash them.
Wizards are magical and are able to cast spells on the big dumb giants
and turn them into toads.
Elves are sneaky little devils with sharp little teeth. They are
so quick that they can bit the heels of the Wizards and therefore
drain the Wizards of all their magical power.
Quick rule: Giants beat Elves
Wizards beat Giants
Elves beat Wizards
Present: When the leader says "Go", each side must present what it is.
Giants: Stand as big and tall as you can, arms extended high
and roar.
Wizards: Extend arms straight out in front and act like you are
casting a spell, yell out ZAP ZAP!!
Elves: Bend knees, scrunch shoulders, hold arms in close to
chest with hands reaching greedly toward other side.
Some sort of mousy facial exression is also nice.
Rules: When a "loosing" boy is tagged by the other team, he
then becomes a member of that team for the next turn.
Sides change members constantly, and just when you
think that all the players on one side will be gone,
they win the next turn and get a bunch of new team
members.
Note: This game is good for a couple of reasons. If you have a
situation were all the same boys play on the same sides
because of friendships, athlectic ability, etc. this will
force new teams. Also, there are no losers. When the
game is over, everyone is on the winning side.
Hope this is useful,
YIS
