I think the word here, if possible, is UNDERSTANDING and COOPERATION.
(That's two words, isn't it?). I try to stress on the boys that a GAME is
more important than a PRACTICE and a troop ACTIVITY is more important than a
troop MEETING, so try to work out a balance. I only have one coach who is
unmoveable in his demands for complete control. He believes that it is his
job to prepare the boys for professional sports (wake up guy, 1 kid in
10,000 makes pro sports and you aren't likely to ever see one), so he
demands complete dedication; you miss a practice, you don't play next game.

I almost fell over when my son's basketball coach came over and told me that
it was ok for the boys to miss the practices which conflict with troop
meetings. He said that this basketball is just for fun and it only lasts
for a couple of months while he realizes scouting is a long term benefit.
There aren't many of those. He's a very laid back coach, doesn't yell,
plays everybody, lets the kids have fun, and, if you believe in rewards,
he's undefeated so far.
