I would have liked to hear his response to this (being that I'm a coach
myself).

While I agree with this, courtesy dictates that such decisions should be
communicated to the Leader or Coach in such fashion as not to play each
against the other. I've known too many coaches (and some leaders) who hold
these decisions against the boy.
