I'll add my two cents on the athletics vs. Scouting discussion. I talked
to the Cubmaster of my sons' Pack last baseball season. He said that
when he was a new CM he took the position that the boys had to choose
between Scouts and baseball. Guess what? He lost a lot of Scouts.

Now he tells parents not to feel bad if they have to "take a vacation
from Scouting" during baseball season. Now the kids come back after the
season. He also hasn't alienated the parents -- and it's surprising how
many activities the boys are able to make even during the season.

For balance sake, I have also taken on one of my son's coaches over this
matter. The one time Nathan left practice 15 minutes early to make an
important Scout meeting, he was chewed out by the coach and told that he
would have to make a choice between baseball and Scouts. I told the
coach in no uncertain terms that he was not my son's parent, and that he
should stick to his job of coaching. Decisions about activities should
be between the parents and the child, without a lot of pressure being
added by coach or Scout leader.
