Re: Young Eagles

I am agree with some of what Jim said. SOME potential YOUNG
Eagles or NOT really prepared. I commented in the past that
I think the FIRST CLASS emphasis have made First class toooo
easy to get. Many merit badges at summer camp are automatic
if you show up for all the classes. I was concerened when
my own son only needed 2 merit badges and was going to
his third summer camp at age 12 years 10 months. He only
finished one, FORTUNATLY and it took him six months to finish
FIRST AID and complete CPR training. He did his project the
following summer and FINALLY completed Eagle at just past 14.
There is a LOT between being ALMOST and Eagle at 12 1/2 or 13,
and BEING an Eagle. That LAST merit badge and the project
may take longer that you expect. My SON is now an Eagle to
be proud of. One member of his First Aid MB class was just
presented a BSA Heroism Medal this past Sunday. As the SPL
my son scheduled the MB class with the town paramedics, plus
all the CPR work. The scout that got the medal SAVED his
own fathers life, with what he learned in BSA first aid and CPR!!!
I am proud of them both! The other scout still needs a couple
required MB's and a project, but Eagle could be an anticlimax
after getting the National BSA Heroism medal! And as Eagle or NOT,
HE WAS PREPARED!
