or a ham, or a stew from scratch. They idea is to show the Scouts
without actually showing them, that you can eat well, clean up without
arguing, etc. (Leading by example. If you tell them, the'll ignore
you, but if they see you doing something, they may pick up on it)"
When I first joined my current troop, this was the way they handled
meals, mainly because they had that many adults on the campout. On some
of our recent campouts, we've had fewer leaders and have been eating
with patrols. However, I like this technique. First of all, the meals
are usually far better (it seems like the kids use the same menus every
time), both in variety and in quality. Second of all, I love to cook,
and it gives me a chance to show off without taking away the scouts
opportunities to plan meals, cook, clean up, etc... Particularly if the
adults make something unusual in a dutch oven, they scouts will find it
(and help with leftovers:). Often, they will see you and decide "we can
do that." The last campout I make a chocolate layer cake and I intend to
make a pie the next time I get a chance.
