Re: Cub Scout "Scout Spirit"

I agree very much with Jim's comments on SCOUT SPIRIT. It has to
be "judged" on an individual basis. Attendenace allone is NOT
valid. My own son and Eagle scout, plays highshool football in the
fall. Missing a practice and you get benched for a game!
He also plays HIGH school CLUB hockey. CLUB hockey has to be run
by PARENTS. The school ONLY allows it to be affiliated under the
name as a CLUB by association, and provides no money or adults
to run or suppervise the progran. PARENTS must be active, and
help raise money (ETC., kinda like scouts :) ANY way, my son still
mangaed to complete his Eagle project in the summer months, plus
all merit badges, plus the Jambo etc.

He attends only about 50 percent on mettings and FEW campouts during
football and hockey season. I THINK HE IS A GREAT EAGLE SCOUT!!
Sure I am his dad, but I am also on District ADV committee. Scott
is above average student in school, plays two sports, and still gets
to scouts when WE can fit it in. I think he is a much more COMPLETE
PERSON than a youth that may have NO OUTSIDE activity except scouts.

On the other hand, Scott goes to scout whenever he has no conflicts.
In fact, he is there more than some scouts that do not play football
or any school sport. The ones that have no conflict and do not
attend meetings are the ones we need to talk to. (or the SM)

Just thought I had to add 2 cents on this topic, since I have to
be at BOTH hockey practice and a troop committee meeting tonite!!!
OUR TROOP is still revising BY-LAW and policy!!!! TO include YES,
scout spirit and attendance issues!!!!
