Re: Thinking Day, Russia

Lynn-

Several years back, my now-Cadettes presented Russia on Thinking Day,
and they sang "Kalinka" in Russian. I found a recording of it -- with
a lyric sheet -- at my local library. They still remember the words
and the pride they felt in singing a song in what was to them an
unusual language. We also learned about the alphabet, which they found
fascinating, and helped other girls at TD make nametags with their
names in Cyrillic letters.

This year, we are doing Vietnam (we have a new Vietnamese member) and
are writing a short play based on a Vietnamese folktale, which a
Brownie troop will present. (Our service Unit "buddies up" troops
because the SU got TOO big and the program got TOO long!) I would be
interested to hear if anyone has information about scouting in the
pre-unification days. Someone in the area said she thought there had
been scouting in South Vietnam, but I have been having trouble finding
more information. The parents do not speak English very well, and I
don't want to rely solely on the confusing information they gave me.
Help out there?

Jo
