Russ,
I am home now and have given your message a closer look.
When you look for people to work on your District Advancement Committee
(remember, you always have to have one Council/District Representative on
the board of Reivew) select people who like to talk and ask questions and
KEEP AN OPEN MIND. I frequently ask Eagle Candidates what is an Eagle
Scout. Concepts overlap, but I never get the same answer. Bob and John
are different. Each board of review is a new adventure of exploration
(hopefully of the scout by himself - I learn too!).
I have trained my committee memebers by taking them along with me when I
sit in on Eagle Boards of Review, learning by doing.
When I start out, I like to explain to the scout that I call these Eagle
Scout CHARACTER Boards of Review. I want him to relax and tell us about
him and his experiences, we are more interested at this point in HIM, than
how well he does the square lashing. You want to put the scout in a
talkative mode and get him to open up. Sounds easy with some, but I have
felt like a dentist trying to pull teeth in some to get them open up.
Getting the Scout to open up and think about himself and what he has done
is one of my major goals in conducting Eagle Boards of Review. I have
never failed to have a successful Board of review when I have been
successful at getting the youth to open up and think about himself and
scouting.
Last, remember you are dealing with individuals, DO NOT COMPARE THEM when
making judgements. They are not all stars on the Football team with a 4.0
GPA. As an Eagle Scout think about this one. Since I earned my
Eagle Award, I became convinced that the hardest part of
earning Eagle is just doing the work. The point is, you do not need to be
super star to become Eagle, just dedicated. Leadership is a part of it,
but there are many ways to demonstrate leadership. (Do not get trapped
into beleiving that only leadership as a forman would demonstrate to his
workers is what the scout has to demonstrate for his Eagle.)
