Re: district eagle review

Russ,

As Ben Suggested, get the EagleTip files, not just the last two but all of
them. There is stuff scattered through out covering the entire process and
if you are going to be in charge of District Advancment, you will need to
know the entire process.

Get a copy (if you do not already have) of Advancement, Council and
District Functions (I think that the title, Do not have a copy here with me
at work). This is a must have!

In reference to the qestions to ask at a board of review, there are samples
form an old committee troop guidebook (you may want this as well since it
talks about boards of reivew) in one of the Eagle Tip Files. Cannot
remember which one.

I try to make it a thought provoking experience for the youths. I have
been accused of asking difficult questions, but most of my questions do not
have right or wrong answers, only answers which require to think about
scouting, etc. I frequently role play and tell the candidate I am from an
Eastern European country and know nothing about or am trying to start up
scouting in the old country. I want to knwo what the scout thinks scouting
is. I then will elaborate and ask, what's this Eagle Scout Thing I hear
about. What does it mean. At the end I will ask him if he feels he fits
hiw own definition of an Eagle Scout.

Re: The boards, here we use the Troop committee and the District/Council
rep. I have sometimes brought someone along (they do not have to be
connected with scouting). When I was in L.A. they used a District Eagle
Board of Review Committee and held the reviews once a month. Most of the
the memebers of the committee were old time scouters (which can be good or
bad). The once a month makes the time committment a lot less, but I prefer
going to the troop and using the troop committee. It takes a lot more
dedication and time, but you do not have to worry as much about taking too
much time in the board (I have sat on boards ranging from 35 mins to 3
hours). It also helps you devleope a better rapor, not jsut with teh
Scoutmaster, but with the entire troop comittee.

I can write novels more, but best you read through the Eagle Tips and then
your still unanswered questions.
