Kevin Carr asked some questions about Philmont. I've never been to
Philmont so I can't address all of them. I do have experience in
backpacking, though, and thought that this might be of use to others. As
others have said before, the best boot is the one that fits you best.
When I backpack I use Vasque Sundowners, but they're pretty expensive. If
you don't plan on doing many long backpacking trips, Sears has a line of
hiking boots called Elk Woods that are suprisingly good boots for as
little money as they cost ($60-$70). I don't use them for backpacking,
but I do use them as everyday shoes and, if you don't need a lot of ankle
support, I think they would work well on the trail. Whatever boots you
use, make sure that you break them in well and that you treat them before
you leave for Philmont. I hope this helps. Have fun at Philmont, and
mkaybe I'll see you there. I'm hopfully going on trail crew July-August.
