Hi Vicki!
Basically, you can't attend a course without paying for it at the
Volunteer Training Center. However, there are several spouses that
attend the course which sent one or the other there, and that's
usually not a problem. So that's one option.
Another option is to see what is available and pay for the course once
you get there to Philmont. Some of the courses may be short and with
a phone call back to the local Council to get your Scout Executive's
concurrance, you would be able to be admitted to another course there.
Finally, another option is for you to enjoy the fresh air and the
great wide openness of the mountains and everything associated with
Philmont.
Here's what I've got in the way of a "typical Philmont schedule":
(this is dated, so please excuse.....and I'm not putting everything in
here because it's several pages full)
"Welcome to Philmont: Upon arrival, join our staff for refreshments
on the Greensward. We're glad you're here.
PROGRAM OFFICE: The program office is located in the rear of the main
training center office building. It is manned by staff members from
8am until 5:30pm to answer questions and assure a meaningful visit.
See the large bulletin board directly behind the office for
recreational and family information.
Fishing licenses, Philmont tour tickets, and change for vending
machines are available at the training center office. Please report
all lost and found items to the training center or tent city offices.
FOOD SERVICE: Your meal schedule is shown in the lower right corner
of your name tag. For example, (DH 2-1_ means you will eat in Dining
Hall #2, first seating. Please follow the seatings and time
schedule on your name tag. The meal schedules are as follows:
(there's a 30 minute break between the two seatings for each meal.
This is by far the BEST time during the conference, because you get to
meet so many different and great and funny people during meals! )
On Thursdays each week, a special set of family activities are
planned. Make sure that you look in the information they provide you
to see where it is you are going and what time it leaves. That
evening, there's a special family campfire program for a hour at the
Campfire Bowl.
On Friday each week, again there's a special set of programs that is
going on...the information will explain it too...
SATURDAY'S SCHEDULE:

anyone planning to hike the Tooth of Time, Cathedral Rock/Hidden
Valley Trail or Urraca Trail: 5pm in the Assembly Hall.

regular dinner hours and seatings will be used.

6:30-7:30pm Sign up on bulletin board. (Ask about the gold toilet!)

what to do when they are hiking and become lost. The presentation is
specially designed for younger kids and Cub Scouts and their parents.

SUNDAY'S SCHEDULE: (in addition to church services),

and each rider must have a inseam of at least 24 inches. The bus
leaves for Ponil from the flag poles at 7:30am.

Phlimont Tour: Tickets will go on sale Friday at 12:30pm for a bus

Mountain Scout Camp, the Stockade, and Cathedral Rock. The bus departs
from the flagpole at 1pm. The cost is $4 per person.
Family Handicraft: The Handicraft Lodge and Trading Post (and it's
large!) will be open from 6:30- 8:30pm (get your Philmont things
here!)
Monday's schedule include a family movie at the Assembly Hall and the
Handicraft Lodge...and Tuesday, there's a Closing Family Program at
7:30pm at the Campfire Bowl.
But Vicki, those are the things that Philmont has for you to do....you
can go into town and drive around....see New Mexican villages and just
drive around..it's great!
Hope that gives you some clue of what the staff at the Training Center
have in store for their visit!
