Ahhhhhhhh, the life living in the SouthWest. Even at almost 5000 feet of
altitude, it was a cool 46 here in Sunny Arizona. A little warmer than
normal we expect to hit 70 today.
It was asked how to go camping in negative temperatures. Some suggestions,
find a spot protected from the wind, use snow as insulation, it's great.
Most important of all, when you combine the words fun and snow you get wet!
Be preparted for this and you will have fun. Be sure you check packs
before you go like you do for back packing!
At home somewhere I have some basic notes for keeping warm, etc... in
winter camping. To me it was amazeing what they were teaching at a Winter
Camp awareness program in San Franciso when I moved there in 1980, but I
had to remember, they did not grow up with snow like I did. I will try to
remember to post these when I get home, they can be useful to none snow
country people, those who have grown up with snow should know the stuff
listed without even thinking about it.
For your reference, my first Campout with the Boy Scouts was at D-A Scout
ranch (Detroit Area Council), it hit -22 on the mercury and the furnance in
the cabin broke down. Being my first campout, I spent the night in the
cabin, but many spent the night out in tents. They looked cold the next
morning, but they had earned their bragging rights!
