Re: The Optional God

Marc,

GSUSA did not change the Girl Scout Promise, they have not
dropped the word "God" from the Promise, and they have not
changed the tenets of the program. The delegates, and I am one
of them, voted to allow flexibility in the use of the word _God_
so as to be more inclusive and accommodating to our diverse
membership. I will be happy to post to SCOUTS-L the actual
wording of the proposal as it passed the National Counicil and I
will include statistics on the vote itself. If anyone would like
a copy of all the proposals, voting info., etc., please e-mail me
PRIVATELY and I will be happy to forward it to you.

I would have to say that the people who spoke against the
proposal were, for the most part, concerned that someone could
substitute inappropriate words for God, such as "money," "Satan,"
etc. Unfortunately, I think people both in and out of scouting
are hearing what they want to hear on this issue. I am sorry to
hear that your Church can no longer support the Girl Scout
program and that a leader quit as well. Perhaps neither
understood the language or intent of the issue. I would hate to
think that anyone based a decision solely on the media coverage!
I do know that all Councils have copies of the agenda items as
they were passed. When I return to work this evening, I will be
happy to post the final wording of the adopted proposal.

Joanne
