Actually Jo, as I understand it, they voted to allow an
appropriate word to be substituted in place of "God" that
represents the diety of choice for the girl... that's not the same
thing as making the reference to God "optional".
In the ``...'' above, I believe there should be ``or nothing at all''.
Optional may not be the most exact description of the situation, but
it's close enough.
Since I have this from a quote from the transcripts of the voting
session, I suggest you might want to check your sourse of
information (and don't use the newspapers as a sourse, they've
reported it three different ways already).
Please share! Is that the full quote that you have? I saw it
reported the same way in at least two newspapers (NYT and a local
Jersey paper), two TV news reports (NYC stations) and a wire service
(UPI via ClariNet). The way that I saw it consistently reported does
not appear to be in conflict with your quote as presented. Girls may
say `God' (and the official version will be preinted using God) or
they may substitute another deity or nothing at all.
