The problem as I see it, is that no one has been able to prove
convincingly just what causes homosexuality.
. . .
I like to think I have an open mind, BUT as a parent I tend to be
conservative and err on the side of overprotecting my children. I
need someone to convince me with scientific, verifiable facts just
what causes homosexuality. The only openly gay member of my
family was heterosexual until she got hooked on cocaine.
You are certainly correct as to the fact that no one has proven a
cause of homosexuality. Also, especially given your personal
exposure, I can understand your concern and caution. I also lean
toward overprotection with my children and I suspect that our
different experiences may account for a lot of our differences in
feelings on this particular point.
In terms of all of the people whose sexuality I (think that I) know, I
don't find any of straight, gay, or bisexual to be particularly better
or worse than the others. That is, I haven't noticed any particular
relationship between characteristics that I would consider `good' or
`bad' and sexuality. In terms of my family members, my impression
would have to be that discovering that one has been suppressing one's
sexuality appears to be a very freeing experience that leaves one less
troubled and more mentally healthy. The sample set is fairly small
however . . . .
While I tend to believe that individuals have a biologically based
predisposition toward a particular sexual orientation, it doesn't
strike me as an important issue. Except for the taboos of specific
religions, I don't think that I've ever heard anyone make a reasonable
case for considering homosexuality to be a bad thing.
