No, I am looking at them as something which I find useful *now* and *here*.
Should I find the scout method no longer to be an effective means of
doing my service to society, I would discard it without any remorse.
And if I were to choose something different, I would call it something
different.. :-)

I wasn't reading "what I think were his thougts", but his thougts as
he clearly expressed them in his books.
And you can of course disagree with his opinions - in fact, I know
many people who don't think scouting is a good idea.
BP's ideas are simple: most youth were lacking some way to develop:
- character (and this includes reverence)
- handicraft and skill
- service to others
- health and fitness
In his books, he further expands on these four points to explain their
meaning, and to prevent people from interpreting them too narrowly,
and described some tools (outdoors life, dayly good deeds, the Jungle
Book, etc. etc.).
Of course, the tools can be amended to fit today; but if you change the
aims it's something different. Not necessarily worse, but something
different.
If you refuse the aims, but just keep some form of the tools, then
you are doing just like the the devil you mentioned earlier.

I think it is only normal to repress some of them.
The problem is not "having to", is "wanting to".
