The Optional God

The changing of the GSUSA promise has prompted a big problem in our
town. Our church, who also sponsors my Troop, has stopped
sponsoring the Girl Scout Troop and is not letting them use Church
property because of the GSUSA policy change. They feel that they
shouldn't be sponsoring a group which has dropped God from their
program. The church has even gone so far as to ask us if the BSA
will be doing likewise. That GS Troop has also lost their leader
for the same reason. There is also talk that some of the other
Troops may lose their church sponsorship.

Now I'm not affiliated with the GSUSA at all, and what I'm reading
from Scouts-L is that GSUSA has not dropped God at all. Maybe this
is just a communication problem between the local Troop and our
Church. I do plan to talk with one of the GS Troop's leaders to
find out what she's been told versus what the Church has been told
versus what I've been reading.

I'm only bringing it up here because I can't believe that we have
the only Church in the country that feels this way and this should
be considered if the BSA ever decides to change its policy towards
God. I believe churches make up a majority of the sponsoring
organizations, at least in this neck of the woods they do. Losing
any sponsors would pretty much guarantee the loss of many boys.
