Absolutely! That's what Scouters in the US have been trying to say all
along. It's been echoed in a number of the postings over the past week:
the Boy Scouts of America is a *private* organization and as such may
set its own rules about who is acceptable and who is not. The Boy Scouts
of America espouses its own philosophy about what is acceptable to turn
boys into men. If you do not agree with that philosophy, no one is forcing
you to join!
Thanks, Gino, for putting it into plain talk for us 'mericans! :)
And by the way, <some> of us think what B-P had to say still holds a great
deal of meaning...how does the bumper sticker go? "America is returning to
the values that Scouting never left." B-P's ideas DO speak to our time.
I'd rather teach his so-called "outmoded" ideas and reach some young men
with his philosophy of ethics and behavior than have them go out and join
a street gang. I can relate to B-P taking those boys out to Brownsea
every time I take a load of new Scouts to camp. The message is still valid.
(Wood Badge really opened my eyes to this, I might add, more so than I had
realized before.)
