I wanted to thank those who responded with clear information and
clarification to my query about the Buddhist would-be Cub Scout. My
email program "strips" the sender's address, so unless it is in your
letter, I can not respond personally. The boy and his parents were
relieved to get your answers; being newcomers to this country (and
refugees from a repressive one) they were afraid that if they told the
scout organizers in our area that they were Buddhists that the boy
would be refused membership. They based this impression on radio news
stories about BSA and atheism, and discussions with their friends,
none of whom were scouters.
I rather like the suggestion to say "my God" rather than just "God";
I am always surprised to find that someone who claims to be an atheist
actually does believe in a supreme spiritual power, but is rejecting
the name and the specific image that it implies in our culture.
