Regarding ads for Scouting on local TV ... National is encouraging local
councils to do it!! In our council we have established a Public
Relations Committee and a new VP slot to head it up. The PR Committee
has district level counterparts, but its main thrust is to have TV spots
prepared, get into the local papers, etc. So far we have had our
Council Pres and Executive Director on the local PBS channel for an
extended discussion on Scouting as well as spots on the local channels
for Scouting For Food, etc. And there is more to come. The idea, of
course, is to get someone from the "industry" who knows what they are
doing rather than the first volunteer who comes along. A professional
media rep has been recruited for our Executive Board and is serving as
the Committee chair. It makes a lot of sense -- marry an individual's
expertise with their love of Scouting and you can do wonders!!

National's thrust is to get the Scouting story out in front of the
public to counteract the press's unrelenting desire to denegrate just
about everything about Scouting and to overstate any issue that may be
detrimental to our movement. A strong, positive counterattack is what
is called for and let the values of Scouting speak!!

If you are not getting in front of the media locally, then you aren't
doing enough. National is not the draconian centralized control that
everyone likes to think it is. It makes for good hyperbole, but isn't
the truth. So, get out and tell the Scouting story.
