Regarding Signature files and the complaint that they take up excessive
space, I would agree that 3-4 lines is probably adequate, and allowable.
Something that uses up far more space is the >quoting of previous
messages, especially long ones, and especially >>double times. There are
times when it is necessary and useful to >quote, but seldom is it
necessary to quote more than the critical 1-2 lines you are directly
referring to.
Some mailer programs automatically copy the message for you when you
(R)eply. This can be helpful, but it is also possible to edit the reply
so that the entire message is not repeated. I cannot give instructions
for all mail programs, but of the 5 I know, all do allow editing the
>quoted reply message. If there is one that doesn't, then don't hit
the (R)eply key but send a new original message.
This will eliminate the >>Double >Single >Quoting which I find far more
objectionable than signature lines. I respectfully suggest everyone learn
all the wrinkles of their respective mailer programs and keep >quoting to
an absolute minimum.
