After reading the several messages on the appropriate types of discussions
for this list and their concern about social value, I for one must agree
with Rick. As long as we live by the Scout Law and discuss what is
important for youth we should discuss the issues. Tigers and what happens
to the program are one issue but the great issue is how we can shape boys
lives. In our society of today youth are exposed to all forms of
information. I believe that this list is a discussion of the many factors
that our boys are exposed. We as leader must be open to discuss the
issues so that we can be honest with our boys. Yes, we all have different
points of view but isn't that what this country was founded on? My
profession in life has been that of a library director for over twenty
years and strongly believe that the individual has the right to
information and to be exposed to all forms of knowledge. If we limit the
discussions on this list we will have violeted each scouters right to
learn, be exposed to different ideas and ways inwhich we will be able to
guide our youth.
If we really believe in this program we must expose ourselves to
all forms of knowledge because our youth are receiving it at other places.
We need to be able to discuss it with them and be knowlegable enough to
guide them and promote the Scout Law as a guide for life.
So much for my social thoughts for the day.
