I don't recall it being that long. Two hours at the most, but I
could be wrong. I know it gives one the impression of its being long, since
it covers about a 20-year span(guessing)of Fred MacMurray's character's
life.
[SPOILER ALERT!]
I think Scouters are attracted to this film because I imaging
everybody sees himself in Fred MacMurray's character at some point in the
film. I think all of us have encountered at least one boy like Kurt
Russel's character at one time or another. We are frustrated, hurt, and
ready to give up on him when suddenly a window of opportunity opens up.
From that breakthrough on, the boy begins soaring. Unfortunately, not all boys
end up making good of a bad situation, so it is nice to see it happen and
imagine. I think all of us wish for that scene when all the boys come to
his house after he has resigned as Scoutmaster and demand to know why he is
not at the meeting place on a meeting night. Finally, I know we all
silently wish that one of our Scouts could end up being a governor, doctor,
or whatever else those first boys became, and that we can live to see that
day.
