As a research Engineer, and a "Neighbourhood Engineer" for a local school, I am
always on the lookout for any ideas/programmes for teaching kids about science
- not basic facts, but the idea that Science is FUN, it is all around us, and
that it's not about men in white coats squirting shampoo into the eyes of rabbi
ts. As Scouts and Guides, we are taught awareness and appreciation of the beaut
ies and wonders of nature. To me, magnetism, blowing soap bubbles, or finding o
ut why nails go rusty is as important as tree identification.
I have a pack of "science idea cards" produced by the Scout and Guide Graduate
Association (SAGGA) here in the UK. These cards contain science-based activites
suitable for a group meeting or camp. If anyone is interested I could post som
e of the ideas. Similarly, if anyone has suggestions for science/technology act
ivites, I would love to hear from you.
Yours in Scouting and Guiding
