A lot of the time, adult involvement is seen as "all or nothing." If
the parent can't go on the campout, they are not "interested", "involved",
etc. We need to remember that people have different levels of committment
and that some of these are time related, others are skill related.
I favor a program where parents are told up front that they must be
involved in their son's program and that the involvement can take several
forms--for those who really want to be active, leadership positions. Others
may just want to go along on outings. Others may need (because of their
personality) to work in the background. There is something for everyone, and
everyone should be expected to do something.
Get a list of needs and ask everyone to sign up on one line (and only one line)
Make sure the needs vary sufficiently to meet the capabilities of the parents.
Do NOT ask parents to work at a level above their capabilities unless you are
willing to provide them proper training.
Jobs should be fun as well as work. One troop I know has trouble keeping the
transportation chairperson. The SM reserves the church vehicle, picks it up,
gasses it, drives it through the car wash. The transportation chairpersons
only role is to clean it up after the outing. Funny, but people just don't
want the job . . .
