Jeff,
This is a long term suggestion which helps and sometimes works if you
follow through with it. First you have to have an Annual calender planned
out at least a year in advance. It has to be published and distributed to
all the parents. Then at your fist committee meeting after the calender is
published, you start taking signup options for driving on certain camp outs
(sometimes you find parents like to go to certain destinations). After
that meeting the transportaion chairman (this is where the follow up is
critical) starts calling all the parents to find out which campout they
will be driving on. The FUN or BEST destinations will be gone at the
committee meeting, leaving the other destinations for those who did not
attend. There will of course have to be participation by ALL PARENTS. SO
BE SURE TO LET THEM KNOW IN ADVVANCE YOU ARE GOING TO DO THIS. You might
get some good attendance at at least one of your troop committee meetings.
If people still refuse to sign up and drive, even after being called,
CANCEL ALL EVENTS. (Even those with drivers.) Be sure everyone knows you
plan to do this and stick by this threat, even if it means you miss an
outing. Odds are the SCOUTS will really chew out their parents for you!
Yes, I hate to see the scouts miss an outing, but remember, Scouting is a
family activity and you do need to get the family active if you are going
to be successful in the long run. If they cannot drive, give them an
option doing something else for the troop.
LAST, WHEN SOMEONE DOES OFFER TO HELP, LET THEM! I have know of many
scoutmasters who like to do it all and rarely let anyone help and then at
the moment they are tired, they say we are not going to do it because noone
is helping!
