Administrative Notes for Dec 1994

Jon Eidson (EIDSON@TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU)
Wed, 7 Dec 1994 11:25:53 CST

Since this is the last week of regular school, the holidays are
fast upon us. Just thought I should say a few things at this
time.

First off, if you will be losing your email access over the holidays,
please consider setting the digest option or nomail options. Since
all rejected email comes my way, I would appreciate your taking action
before I have too. Second, if you are losing your email address, please
unsubscribe before prior to losing your id. Same reasons as above.

Finally, I must address the "gay/religion" postings that are beginning
to crop up. Its not that most of us cannot, in an adult and scoutlike
manner, address such issues ... it just that these issues quickly become
emotional and seem to turn into flame wars very quickly with NOBODY
winning and EVERYBODY losing. Those of us in scouting circles have
heard all the arguments of both sides. This is one of the big problems
of the "rec.scouting" newsgroup which we try to avoid here.

When an individual subscribes to the scouts-l they automatically receive
a copy of the "SCOUTS-L WELCOME" file explaining the guidelines for using
this list. When an individual subscribes to scouts-l, uses fake names,
and their first and ONLY posting is to bring the rec.scouting "gay" wars
over to here then I will take IMMEDIATE and SWIFT action against that
subscriber.

Just for the records, this is only the 2nd time I've had to do such
things. Ususally a quick note is all that is required to remind people
about our guidelines ... we all have our hot buttons :) The only other
reason subscribers are removed is due to bounced email. Sometimes systems
reject email from scouts-l tell me that an address is nolonger valid.
My usual options are to first set the digest option (this reduces my
bounced email from that subscriber to 1/day) and then do actually remove
the id. The listserv can automatically remove ids from rejected mail,
but it only hits about 10 %.

Thanks for listening. I hope everyone has a happy and SAFE holiday
season.

Yours in Scouting,
Jon Eidson, Listowner Scouts-L (eidson@tcubvm.is.tcu.edu)
