Metal in lieu of cloth

The metal Boy Scout rank pins are definitely not hat pins.
They remain the original rank awards. The cloth ones were
provided because they were less expensive. Most Scouters do
not even know the metal rank medals still exists as an
optional item. BTW, the former hat pins had a screw pin to
fit the hole in the campaign hat. These have a safety pin
for uniform wear.
When you file your Advancement Report (Troop, Team, Post,
Ship), BSA Supply Number 34403 remember to order the metal
badges on the reverse in lieu of the cloth ones. As
Scoutmaster of of Troop 1, I never awarded cloth badges. The
troop never utilized cloth rank badges in the past and still
does not use them. The metal pins are identical to the ones
I was awarded in the 1940s. At least something wonderful has
remained!!! <VBG> Our troop and ship members firmly
believe that the metal awards look better, are more
"special" and, in our opinion, better reflect the honour due
our Scouts for their achievements. We also use them above
the port pocket on Sea Scout uniforms.
