Hi Bruce,
Our post took a trip to Glacier National Park last summer. Here's a
few things we found that may or may not be helpful to you.
1. It took us 2 1/2 days traveling each way. We stayed in a church the first
night and a motel the second on the the way there. On the way back we stayed
in a motel the first night and a church the second. It meant we didn't have
to worry about packing up wet camping gear if it rained, we got an earlier
start in the morning and could travel later, and, since there isn't easy
access to showers at Glacier, we all got showers before and after being
there. When I checked motels for prices, I told them we were a scout group
and the number of males & females we would be bringing. The 2 motels we
stayed at were very accomodating and gave us good prices and large rooms.
2. Something that didn't work well was cooking suppers on the days we were
traveling. It slowed us down alot.
3. All 3 vehicles had C.B.'s. It helped when someone wanted to stop, so they
could let the others know. It also relieved the boredom, as a fair amount of
teasing and joking went on between the vehicles.
4. By the time we arrived at Glacier, our members were excited and ready to
hike almost immediately. Even though they're used to normal safety
precautions, they were ready to go off in 3 different directions without
informing the advisors of who was going where.
