Newcastle Gang Show 1998

I have had much pleasure this week watching the Gang Show where i've been doing a bit of stewarding (and joining in with the songs). My knowledge of the history of such events is limited but I have heard the names Ralf Reader and Ted Potts and know that newcastle is the 3rd oldest Gang show in existence.
Does any one know anymore than this and if so could they please tell us?
Are there any up and coming?
Does everywhere in the world still sing "We're Riding along on the crest of a wave."?
Is the saying "Every night of every year a gangshow is playing somewhere" true?
Personally I have never won a red Kneckerchief but will try next year.
