Sounds like something that happened to me the over week. I went on a Geography trip to look at glaciated scenery. There were 2 scouts (myself and a mate) who turned up in our stinking, tried and tested, camping gear (waterproofed cotton trousers, buffalo woolen shirts, army boots and army woolly pullies) for warmth and Nikwax Analogy coats and trousers for protection from the elements. The others turned up in their designer hiking trousers and boots with go faster stripes etc. and t-shirts. We got laughed at.
Five hours later It started to rain and our MLTB walk leader turned us back (he had told the people they should put on their waterproofs but none of the non-scouts had remembered to re-proof them) well we arrived back three hours later everyone, except the MLTB leader myself and my friend, absolutely freezing and soaking wet. They found out the hard way that just because something is expensive, looks good and is made of expensive material that it will do the job best. they plan to buy a lot of cheap, good stuff next time even if they do look like tramps. They had forgotten the golden rule a lot of layers is better than one thick one. It was lucky for them that the MLTB leader had brought some spare clothes with him which allowed them all to put on fresh dry laters to prevent Hypothermia.
