I would certainly echo Cliff's comments. We have had a joint post and
troop for 18 years, and they complement each other very well. The key is
to allow the youth to plan quality activities and events that don't
overburden their schedules, and that appeal greatly to them. We try to do
one post meeting per month and one outdoor/activity per month. We try to
do one or more "superactivities" during the summer and/or Spring Break
each year.
To broaden the area of interest, we have concurrently chartered a Sea
Explorer Ship with the post, and Explorers/Sea Explorers will begin
earning the Quartermaster Award. One of our Advisors recently completed
Sea Badge Training in Houston and has set up contacts with Sea Explorer
Ships in the Houston area for future exchange programs.
We are also testing the prototype requirements for the new Explorer Ranger
Award which will be released in 1998.
This year the Post/Ship will be SCUBA diving in Cozumel, Mexico,
which is a repeat of our 1994 trip. We also plan to attend National
Explorer Leadership Conference in Maryland, and the regular menu
of rock climbing, whitewater canoeing on the Green River, and
backpacking and hiking.

Boulder is a bit more than a day's drive from Phoenix, but if you are
interested in some Colorado skiing, we could certainly put you up at our
Scout Center. Most ski areas are only an hour to two hours drive from
Boulder (Copper, Breckenridge, Arapahoe, Keystone, Winter Park, Eldora;
Vail and Aspen are a little further, but still an easy drive.)
