Hi all you quiet folks, I just wanted to share our Scouting for Food
experience.
On Saturday,11/15, the Explorers handed out 400 flyers at the entrance to a
supermarket asking people to purchase food for the national BSA food drive.
On that day it was pouring rain all day so the number of shoppers was
lower than expected. Also, the donations at the curb in the SFF bags was
down 25%. They collected 200 food items and $8.00 in donations.
Getting the post involved was an interesting trail. In years past, the
post has participated with the Boy Scouts distributing and collecting bags
to residences. They were discouraged by the low participation of the
homes. This year they voted to participate at a grocery to catch all the
people who do not get food bags at their house or forget to put it out.
Well, since this is a national program, in our district, all the
participants are to wear uniforms. The members didn't want to stand in
front of the store in uniform - it would be "embarrassing." Well, we have
a rule that the first in line for outings are those who do the service.
Thus, the upcoming ski trip motivated participation. As it turned out, it
was a cold, windy, rainy, day. Everyone was covered head to foot in rain
gear. No uniform could be seen (I checked that they were there). Instead
of embarrassing, the kids got points with several teachers for their good
service. All the members agreed that this was better, dryer, and easier
than walking neighborhoods.
Also, on the back of the flyer was an ad for the Post and the Exploring
program so hopefully we raised people's awareness of the program while
collecting food.
Since service is one component of the Exploring program. I would be
interested in hearing about service projects of other posts.
