Hello!
My name is Sylvester Tan, and I am the Southern Region Representative on
the National Explorer Cabinet, for those of you who don't already know me.
I have been a quiet member of this list for some time now, and I was
already a member of Explorer net when I took office at the 1996 NELC.
Although I haven't said much, I am very interested in listening to what the
youth members of this list have to say, since representing Explorers is one
of my foremost responsibilities.
Recently, I have been working with a group of youth leaders and some
volunteers from around the nation involved with both Exploring and the
Order of the Arrow to evaluate and develop new leadership programs.
Although this is _not_ an official program, inquiry, etc., its results will
be submitted in my report to the national professional staff in my final
report at the end of my term. I am working with David Nieglos, the Western
Region Representative, and prominent members of the Order of the Arrow in
this endeavor.
I would appreciate your input on several topics as we try to evaluate the
state of Exploring today. What I would like to hear about first is input
about the Explorer Officers' Association at the council and/or district
level. I am not interesting in hearing how the EOA is supposed to work-- I
know the book forwards and backwards. I would like to hear how the EOA in
your council works or does not work. What do you believe are the strengths
and weaknesses of the current system? How can we develop the current system
into a stronger, more supportive EOA? What do you believe the place of the
EOA is in Exploring, and for Arrowmen, how would you compare/contrast that
role with the role of the lodge in the Order of the Arrow? If you don't
tell me what you think, I can't represent you! Thank you very much, and
later on I will ask your opinions on other aspects of the Explorer program.
