The Explorer Advanced Leadership Development Workshop is probably what you
are looking for. It is designed to be taught to a mix of Explorers and
Advisors/Committee members. There are opportunities for the youth and the
adults to do brainstorming and assessments, then compare ideas. Other
features are leadership and communications skills training, as well as
team building exercises. It usually takes about five hours.
We also add in some post program planning and brainstorming techniques so
the explorers are comfortable with coming up with a wide variety of
ideas; then selecting those which are of most interest, committing them
to a calendaring/planning process. The end result is usually a ready made
post program for six months to a year with a full range of ideas in each
of the six experience areas. Many posts have actually taken this
"practice" exercise and used it for their post program for the first few
months until they get more settled. The feedback we have gotten is that
the program is very helpful to posts and gives both explorers and advisors
a good feel for how a post should run, what the relationships are between
Explorers and Advisors, and how to make sure the post continues to be run
by the youth with only assistance and advice when requested from the
advisors.
The forms and literature for the brainstorming and program planning are
contained the explorer leader guidebook (which of course is written for
both the Explorers and the Advisors to use concurrently).
The Advanced Leadership Development Workshop Syllabus and video tape kit
are available from your council office or can be ordered from National
Supply if your Council does not have it stock. If you have an Exploring
training team, they should be able to provide the course for you. If not,
you can study the syllabus for this training and probably do a good job
yourself.
By the way, our Training team is also composed of Explorer Members and
Advisors together who are excellent in conducting the training. Youth
leading youth always works best in Exploring especially. We recruited
youth members from our Alpha Phi Omega/Explorer Post 492 Community Youth
Services Post and gave them instructor training to conduct the workshops.
They even made some good revisions to the syllabus to make it more user
friendly. This same group also conducts a Merit Badge University each
semester and staffs the District klondike Derby as well as running
concessions at our Scout show, so they are a great resource.
Your suggestion of having the training in conjunction with a high
adventure outing is excellent. We often do some activity or even just a
cookout during or after the training just to keep the "fun" part on a high
level.
