I am going to jump in here for a second. If I am off my rocker, just =
slap me.
If we are making our own compass, they do mean a size 5, a rather hearty =
needle.

Again, if we are building our own, yes, stroking a magnet across the =
needle will magnetize it, and when floated in water, the south end of =
the magnet points direct North. =20
IF YOU CHOOSE TO READ ON, ENSURE YOU HAVE SOME CHEAP, 30cent COMPASSES =
available, DON'T DO THIS WITH YOUR SCOUT COMPASSES, OR YOUR SCOUT'S =
COMPASS!!!!!
Now, if you want to talk regular COMPASS needles, one thing you can do =
in an orienteering class is take one of the compasses (Compai?) and put =
the North end of a magnet over the south end of the needle, pulling it =
to the top. QUICKLY, (and I DO mean Quickly!) run the magnet over the =
needle, towards the NORTH end of the needle. This will remagnatize the =
needle, and the North end of the needle will now point North. (It is =
supposed to point South.) Ensure that you have the groups do a small =
excercise ahead of the orienteering course, so they notice the one wrong =
compass. They learn teamwork, and you can then lead into watching =
stars, etc as an aid in orienteering.
