This reminds me of something my sons' Scoutmaster used to say when the
subject got around to Youth Protection Guidelines. George was 70+, still
camped, and was as caustic as they come when it comes to dealing with
bureaucracy (spawned, no doubt, by a lifetime with the USGS and Bureau of
Mines). He'd say, "They should call it 'YOU-Protection Guidelines' or
'US-Protection Guidelines', because it's meant to the organization BSA
against lawsuits, and it's meant to protect us against false accusations.
I cannot find anything to disagree with in that analysis. IMHO, there
are a lot of frustrations in our lives these days, a significant portion
of which have been brought because (1) common sense is uncommon and (2)
too many of us are unwilling to accept responsibility for our actions.
That is, of course, a personal opinion and not an official position of
BSA or any of its councils.
