> Has anyone who follows this list ever been to either of these sites?

Yes, I think quite a few of us have.

There's a regular bus from Adelboden down to Frutigen, and either bus or
train from there up to Kandersteg. There's still a couple of km walking at
either end. Check out the links below for bus and train times!
('Adelboden, Oey' is the bus stop nearest Our Chalet.)

> Are bike rentals available anywhere near?

Probably, but I'd not really want to carry a mountain bike over the ridge
to
Kandersteg and back!

> I wasn't asked specifically about car rentals, but I wouldn't rule them
out.

Probably only available at airports and in the major cities. Neither
Adelboden nor Kandersteg counts as a major city, and parking at Our Chalet
is limited in any case.

The combination of bus and train can get you halfway across Switzerland and
back in a day, and a travelpass keeps the cost reasonable. I know one
group staying at KISC who managed to visit France, Italy, Liechtenstein,
Austria and Germany all in _one_ day using Swiss public transport only!
