New user Jack Wright, introduction.

Greetings to all on SCOUTS-L! I=92m Jack Wright, a new subscriber and
here=92s my intro. If you share any of our specialized interests, listed
below, I=92d be glad to hear from you. I=92m titling the paragraphs below =

for convenience.

My son John III (same e-mail address) is age 13 and a Patrol Leader in
Troop 30 (Brainerd UMC), Cherokee Area Council, Chattanooga, TN. I=92m
age 54, and been involved with him in scouting for only 2 years as an
ASM and Troop Committee Member. He=92s also a 7th grader at McCallie
School in Chatta. We share most all outdoor recreation interests, but
especially whitewater canoeing.

Whitewater canoeing:
I paddle a classic 17=92 ABS Blue Hole "Cumberland" open canoe, John
paddles a WaveSport MicroX kayak, and we do it most on the Hiwassee
River, near the Olympic Ocoee River in Polk Co. TN. I chair a council
Whitewater Committee which has purchased 12 ABS open canoes with all
whitewater eqpt. and 2 trailers, to be put in service for any council
Troop to use next May. I realized canoeing was an ancient BSA activity,
but I found most of the leadership of the few Troops around here which
owned canoes very poorly outfitted or trained for the risks involved in
Class I - III whitewater. I am also a professional safety engineer
(CSP) and a 1967 charter member and past president of the local canoe
club (TVCC). I plan to do an archive search on canoeing, and will do a
separate posting on our second annual council whitewater safety training
weekend, set for May 17 &18, =9297. If you live within a few hours of
Chatta. you might be interested in this safety training.

Safety of lightning:
One other special interest in scouting is some safety research I=92ve done
on lightning. We had a lightning fatality of a 10 year old, 10 years
ago, at our scout camp Skymont in Grundy Co. TN. Turns out it can be
prevented, knowing and using the proper preventive measures ahead of
time. I developed a couple of MSWord docs and graphics from our
Quicktake camera of the "lightning-safe crouch".

Thank you for your time. If you have info you think I could
productively use to further these interests, I=92d be glad to hear from
you. Jack Wright.
