For the past 3 years, we have been crossing over our Webelos at the Blue and
Gold (late February) and it works remarkably well. They get a chance to go
on 3-4 campouts before summer camp to work out any camping kinks. Most kids
have finished all the webelos stuff in 1 1/2 years anyway. We still hold a
district 'crossover ceremony' at our spring camporee in May.... It's just to
welcome the new kids to the district troop community. The troop flags are
arranged around the campfire, the new kids are introduced and proceed to
their troop flag, grabbing the pole, then a big round of welcome applause
for the bunch.
And yes, I have a scout who will be eligible (if he keeps up his current
progress) for OA election next May when he'll still be 10. He already has 7
nights camping, will get 6 more at summer camp, has only one second class
requirement left, so should have no problems with OA elegibility. He was
elected patrol leader for the new scout patrol earlier this year, and is
easily the smallest (physically) scout in the troop.
