I would like to thank all of you for the answers re my election question.
It is definite that 3 of the 4 candidates were not eligible. I have spoken
with the District Exec and the Chapter Adviserand the election will be
voided, fortunately the results were not announced. The Adviser told me
that the team was advised by the CC of who was eligible based upon 15 days
and nights of camping already obtained. The Assistant Scoutmasters at the
meeting, one of which has been with the Troop for 10 years, were never
consulted.
I got a call last night from the CC, who is an OA member, who told me that
he had spoken with the Lodge Chief and the Lodge Adviser and had been led
astray by the OA election team, that the 3 scouts were not eligible and
then proceeded to tell me that the ineligible Scout who was elected should
stay as elected as he was a good friend of the CC's son and he would be of
great help to his son in getting the Chapter active again. He added that
if I wanted to stop it I would have to write letters to do so as the
results had already been forwarded to National.
I told the CC that I had made my own calls and that I was afraid that I
could not allow the election to stand. The reaction was not a good one.
I then called the COR and asked him to look into the matter as it appears
that my working relationship with the CC is badly damaged and I don't know
if it is recoverable.
I can truely say I wish that the whole matter had never come up. However,
I also believe that OA needs to be a true election and not rigged.
Something about "A Scout is Trustworthy." Election should be something a
Scout should be proud of, not made of little value because it was awarded
by some slight of hand. There is always next year for it to be a goal to
be worked towards.
