Very poorly. The newer ones run (they were made with some
new dye) and you end up with shirts with tints of red in them.
The older ones hold up, and will hold up better if you use a
can of Scotchguard {tm} on them before you sew the patches
and other items onto it.
I was given one of those red vests as a Scout and after one
camporee in which afterwards, my shirt became some sort of
cross between tan khaki and red, I decided to try something
else, hence the dark green jac-shrt on which I placed patches
on the backside of. That's become my "trademark".
Somewhere, I don't know where, I picked up a light blue vest
that either was the lining of a jacket or something, and have
used it...it's confortable. Later on, I bought a cotton vest from
the Canadian Scout Shop during InterCamp 85. I've Scotchguarded both and
they hold up really well.
Someone gave me another red one that they got from an estate sale (without
the patches on it...darn!) and after I shared my
embarrasing earlier experience, they suggested that I presoak
it in a sink with warm water and soap to insure that the dyes
will stay, and then dry, iron and Scotchguard it. I did that, and
haven't had a problem with it since.
At the same time, Sue, I've learned how to get out of the rain
and the importance of always "being prepared" by bringing
a rain jacket *grinning*.
