The part of the merit badge sash which is worn on the outside on the
backside of the
Scout, Varsity Scout, or Explorer. Temporary patches are worn starting at
the top of
the backside of the sash, so that in the front are merit badges, and on the
back are
temporary patches. Of course, merit badges are ALWAYS permitted on BOTH SIDES
of the sash.
The Venture Letter goes at the bottom of the front of the merit badge sash,
toward the
"point" of the sash.
So, as you are looking at the Scout or Explorer, in the front would go merit
badges
and as you turn him around, either merit badges or temporary badges are shown.
Hope that helps you and others out. As Fred and Jim both stated, it *is* a
recent
change, one which was done after a LOT of yelling back and forth between Program
Group members, some of which wanted to retain the sash as a "billboard" for
merit
badges ONLY as in tradition, and others which saw no real reason why other
temporary
insignia, not worn on the uniform shirt presently, could NOT be worn there.
It looks
awkward, but the *real reason* why the change was made was so that Scouts could
wear merit badge sashes earlier and to provide a place for temporary event
and activity
patches when many Councils and individual Scouts wanted to place a
particular patch
centered on the right pocket.
