An invitation is ALWAYS appropriate, and should be your
first (in my opinion, the ONLY, but that' ME talking here!)
way to "beg for goodies" for your new Eagle.
An invite should include a short, brief letter, which could
be like the one on the MacScouter web site, or something
like the below:
Thank you ever so much for your consideration in
attendance. In lieu of attendance, I am sure that Johnny
Jones would enjoy receiving a letter of greeting and
acknowledgement from you (your office). This will be
presented to Johnny along with other items during this
special ceremony to award the Eagle Scout Badge to him.
I always recommend the invitation, because it is POSSIBLE
and SOMETIMES PROBABLE that the person you send the
invite to WILL show (or send a primary "stand-in" in his
or her place....the closer to home the better the chances!)
to actually shake the hands of the Scout (and to get their
picture taken...).
There has been several experiences by Scouters that have
sent letters to Mayors, Judges, Congressmen and Senators,
and even the Vice President and President...and they have
SHOWN UP! So, don't send a invite to someone you don't want to show up for
the Court of Honor. It's also a good
idea to express the invite as an "awards ceremony" or a
"recognition ceremony" than "Court of Honor". Some
folks don't *know* what a Court of Honor is.
Hope this helps!
