Dear friends
Another note relating to Sea Scouting in Europe may be of interest.
Sea Scouts and the Tall Ships Race in Europe.
In Europe the annual Tall Ships Races are sponsored by Cutty Sark Scots
Whisky and are therefore known as the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Races.
The 1998 Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race was from Falmouth (UK) to Lisbon
(Portugal) to Vigo (Spain) to Dublin (Ireland).
Sometimes larger Scout owned yachts take part in the Tall Ships Races,
depending on their route. This year 3 Scout vessels were involved. The
Polish "Zawisza Czarny", 32.2m schooner (Sea Scout Training Centre),
participated from Falmouth to Vigo, but did not come to Dublin. Two
British ketches from the Scouts Offshore Group, "Ocean Scout" and "Offshore
Scout", 14.9m, took part in all the legs.
"Ocean Scout" was chartered by Irish Sea Scouts for the leg from Vigo to
Dublin and nine Irish Sea Scouts joined the crew.. Two other Sea Scouts
obtained places by competition on the Irish National Sail Training
brigantine "Asgard" and a further three sailed on the Russian full rigged
ship "Mir" for the same leg.
About 200 Sea Scouts also took part in activities connected with the Tall
Ships stay in Dublin - a big rowing display in the river, providing and
crewing a safety patrol boat, radio operators in the communication centre,
stewards at the Parade of Crews. Luckily the weather for those few days in
August was good and it was a wonderful event.
Future Tall Ships Races -
Cutty Sark 1999 - St Malo (France) - Greenock (W Scotland) - Lerwick
(Shetland Islands) - Alborg (Denmark).
Cutty Sark 2000 - Gdansk (Poland) - Helsinki (Finland) - Mariehamn (Aland
Islands) - Flensburg (Germany)
Cutty Sark 2001 - Antwerp (Belgium) - Alesund (Norway) - Bergen (Norway) -
Esbjerg (Denmark)
TALL SHIPS 2000 - In 2000 this will be a special event, with two starting
points - Southampton and Genoa. The two contingents will meet in Cadiz and
then sail across the Atlantic to Bermuda, Boston, Halifax, returning across
the Atlantic to Amsterdam.
