Greeings Kevin,
Your long dialogue re: problems with your ship has elicited volumes of
responses, all with their own well meaning suggestions...and all are
different. That's the key; problems are basically similar but solutions
(that work), differ.
Heed Matt's especially insightful observations (3rd paragraph) about
your position as Skipper. It has nothing to do with your personal
comittment or qualifications, for you are highly qualified and
comtitted, It has to do with the chemistry of the group and what appears
to be, from your description, a particularly bad mix. A new, even
temporary Skipper could change the situation.
Another observation; the 19 year old and his mother appear to have you
well under control. Regarding Mom's constant reminder that this is "not
the navy", I would suggest responding to her that it IS like the Navy
and it will be run as such. It is for those who seek this type of
program including the disciplin and personal responsibility. If he
should choose not to abide by the standards of the Ship then he has no
alternative but to resign. It should be his choice...not yours.
Best of luck. Keep us posted.
