Grays Harbor Surf Riders

Jack (jack@seanet.com)
Fri, 17 Oct 1997 05:55:21 -0700

Just to let everyone know what were up to.

We have changed our name to "Grays Harbor Surf Riders". We chose this name
because our ship's name is "Mamala". Mamala is a Hawaiian name for "Surf
Rider"; a mythical Hawaiian goddess that sometime she was human and
sometimes was a shark. She was know to ride the surf with grace.

We are raising money to purchase the Mamala from the city of Hoquiam. The
mayor said to make us an offer. So we are going to offer the same amount
that they paid for it 5 years ago. $1,700.00 dollars. If we don't give
them our offer before January 1st of 1998 then it becomes revenue for the
city and we lose the ship. (Now where did I put that fund raiser packet)

We went sailing on the "Lady Washington" this summer. What a big success!
We sailed the Lady from Westport, Wa to Hoquiam, Wa. It took us 5 and a
half hours to sail to Hoquiam. They said it was only going to be a 4 hour
cruise (ya right). When we got to Hoquiam it was dark. Try to motor a 175
ton tall ship in a river at low tide in the dark. We dragged a little mud
and had to back up a little just to get up the little Hoquiam river.
Strange how rivers change week to week. This little trip was such a
success the crew of the LW invited us back next summer to sail again all
summer long if we wish.

For a crew that almost wasn't because of the BSA. We are getting off to a
good start. We are 22 strong now and we don't even have a ship yet. We do
have a lot of hope though. Thought we are a renegade sea scout group, the
crew is optimistic on the idea of starting a new youth program from the
ground up.

Well there you have it. This is just a small sample of what we have been
up to. I want to thank all of the ships out there that gave us
encouragement to continue and not give up. These maritime youth programs
are important to our communities. Without them we have teens doing
undesirable things.

Sincerely,

Jack Richards (a.k.a Captain Jack)
Skipper of the "M/V Mamala"
