12 July 1775 - Control over Indian tribes declared by the Continental Congress
7 August 1784 - The first federal Indian Reservation was established
7 August 1789 - The Department of War was established with the Secretary of
War managing Indian affairs
14 May 1804 - Lewis and Clark expedition began
28 May 1830 - Indian Removal Act, whereby the Five Civilized Tribes were
moved to what became Indian Territory (i.e., Oklahoma)
21 July 1882 - "Indian Territory" established
23 January 1892 - Charles D. Curtis becomes the first person of American
Indian ancestry to be elected to the U.S. House of representatives
6 July 1912 - Jim Thorpe wins the pentathlon and decathlon at the Olympic
Games in Sweden
2 June 1924 - American Indians became U.S. citizens by Act of Congress
4 March 1929 - Charles D. Curtis becomes the first person of American
Indian ancestry to be elected Vice President of the United States
18 June 1934 - Indian Reorganization Act authorized self-government for all
tribes
14 October 1964 - Billy Mills wins the Gold Medal in the 10,000 meter run
during the 1964 Olympic Games held in Japan
9 May 1992 - President Bush declared 1992 as a national year of
reconciliation between Amereican Indians and non-Indians
