A few thoughts for starters.......
1. you say they shared stoves, how many went? Was the Patrol
method used?
2. What cans? What did you eat? Food can be a great place to
cut weight. There are lots of good sources for backpacking
food. Even Philmont will sell their pre-packaged meals.
3. I'm not sure I'd go anywhere w/o a fly for my tent. You
might consider doing it the other way around. Leave the tent
home and sleep under the/a fly.
4. You're right, clothing is another big area. On a trip like
that, you should be able to get by with very little extra.
Raingear, extra shorts, shirt and underwear should do it.
Perhaps long pants depending on the evening temps and sleeping
plans.
5. Sleeping gear: in that kind of weather, sleeping bags would
be optional in my opinion. Consider a 'bed roll', or a sleeping
bag liner. I would probably sleep in a hammock wearing sweats
and long sleeves.
I hope these ideas help some. If you have some more specific
questions, contact me privately.
